HIFU / Haifu for uterine fibroidsTreat fibroids while preserving the uterus.
Reduce tissue trauma without open abdominal surgery.
For suitable patients who want fibroid treatment while preserving the uterus and avoiding an abdominal incision, Haifu offers extracorporeal ablation. China has multicentre clinical experience; eligibility depends on fibroid imaging and a safe acoustic pathway.

- Median hospital stay in the HIFU group
- 4 days; not a promise of an individual itinerary or fitness to fly
- Serious adverse events
- HIFU 0.2% versus surgery 12.6%; non-randomised, not proof that HIFU is better for everyone
20 hospitals enrolled 2,411 patients, including 1,353 receiving HIFU. Patients chose treatment; groups differed in age, body size and other factors. View the evidence
Costs are the manufacturer's total-cost reference in RMB dated 2025-10-30, not a foreign-patient package. Uterine preservation does not establish improved fertility; ablation suitability needs assessment. View sources
Preserve the uterus while aiming to reduce treatment trauma
Haifu focuses ultrasound from outside the body to treat fibroids, usually without an abdominal incision. Chinese teams' multicentre experience can inform whether your fibroids suit this uterus-preserving pathway.
Treat fibroids from outside the body
Use MRI and ultrasound to assess fibroid location, blood supply and the acoustic pathway, including whether bowel or abdominal scars affect safety.
Choose according to your pregnancy plans
Compare Haifu with medication, myomectomy and embolisation. Suitability for pregnancy planning cannot be judged by uterine preservation alone.
Use the RMB 20,000–30,000 reference to explore your own budget
The manufacturer's published total-cost reference is approximately RMB 20,000–30,000, dated 2025-10-30; applicability to foreign patients is unconfirmed. Your budget is fully self-funded without Chinese health insurance or assistance, with the hospital specifying included items.
- Manufacturer's published total cost
- Approximately RMB 20,000–30,000, 2025-10-30
- Actual hospital treatment quote
- After imaging assessment; applicability to international patients unconfirmed
- Tests, pain relief, admission and follow-up
- Confirm inclusion item by item; transport and accommodation are additional
The manufacturer is not the charging hospital. A post-insurance figure of RMB 4,000–9,000 must not be used as an international patient price. Repeat treatment may add costs.
Finding treatment that fits you
starts with the reports you already have.
Clarifying your disease type and previous treatment helps establish whether this option could form part of a plan for you.
- Symptomatic benign fibroidsImaging should support a benign diagnosis and symptoms should relate to the fibroid. Asymptomatic patients may not need treatment.
- Wish to preserve the uterusState your pregnancy timeline; preserving the uterus is not proof of improved fertility.
- Not suitable for immediate ablationSuspected malignancy, an unsafe acoustic pathway or other gynaecological causes require further investigation first.
Beyond less trauma, consider recovery and recurrence
In the Chinese IDEAL study, quality of life improved faster in the HIFU group, but absolute differences between groups were small. Treatment was non-randomised and patient-selected; faster individual recovery cannot be guaranteed.
- Serious adverse events
- HIFU 0.2%, surgery 12.6%; non-randomised comparison
- Fertility evidence
- NICE considers effects on subsequent pregnancy and fertility uncertain
Patients must be informed of skin burns and nerve or bowel injury risks. Fibroids may remain, and symptoms may recur and require retreatment.
You do not need to book flights first.
Clarify treatment and costs before you travel.
Tell us your diagnosis, previous treatments and main concerns. We help you communicate about Shanghai consultation requirements, budgets and travel arrangements.
- Provide original contrast-enhanced pelvic MRI images and reports to assess fibroids and the acoustic pathway
- Organise menstrual blood loss, anaemia tests and symptom records to clarify your priorities
- List previous abdominal surgery and gynaecological treatment to assess ablation suitability
- Explain your pregnancy timeline and provide medication and allergy lists

You do not need to arrange new tests yourself for an initial consultation.
Get answers to the questions that matter to you
before you travel.
Costs, potential benefit and further treatment deserve specific answers before departure.
Will the fibroid disappear immediately after uterus-preserving treatment?
No. Ablated tissue shrinks gradually, and symptoms and imaging are used to assess the result. Fibroids may remain, symptoms can recur and some patients need further treatment.
Can I choose Haifu if I want to become pregnant later?
Pregnancy plans should inform treatment, but fertility benefit cannot be promised. NICE considers effects on subsequent pregnancy and fertility uncertain. Gynaecology and reproductive teams should assess the uterine cavity, fibroid location and timing of pregnancy attempts.
How long should I plan to stay for treatment?
The study's median 4-day admission is not an individual itinerary. Before returning home, exclude complications, assess fitness to fly and arrange follow-up and local medical care.
