Bring your aids, available hearing tests, fitting records and a description of how consistently you use the devices. Tell the audiologist about feedback, discomfort, maintenance problems or difficulty with background noise. NIDCD explains that aids amplify sound, have practical limits and may need adjustment for different listening situations. Poor experience with one device does not establish that all amplification has been optimised. Ask what benefit is measurable with suitable aids and whether a fitting or support problem should be addressed before moving to an implant discussion.

A cochlear implant is not simply a stronger hearing aid. It uses an external sound processor and an implanted component to deliver signals that stimulate the auditory nerve. The brain has to learn or relearn how to interpret those signals. Implants can help some people recognise sounds and understand speech, but they do not restore normal hearing and results vary. Remaining hearing does not by itself settle candidacy either way. Ask how your present hearing, history and communication needs relate to the potential benefit being discussed.

Implantation is followed by device activation, programming and practice in interpreting sound, with audiology and speech-language support often involved. Ask who will provide those services, how progress will be assessed and what to do if the device is uncomfortable or not helping as expected. If returning abroad, identify a local provider able to support the proposed system before committing to it. Compatibility and access must be checked, not assumed. Obtain the device information and clinical handover, and ask about any restrictions relevant to future examinations such as MRI.
